it has been cold this week...well cold really does not justify how the weather has been. keep in mind a couple of things 1) i live in utah and 2) it is late november/early december. it has been brutally cold. according to Jodi Saeland (a local meteorologist) it has not been this cold for four year and last time it was in february when it is supposed to be cold. i should be enjoying 40 degree high temperatures...not 20. twenty degrees should be the low. ironically a couple of weeks ago, i would have complained about 40 degrees and comment on how chilly that is. perspective.
now granted i grew up in illinois (chicago vicinity) and should understand cold weather, but i have aclimated to my present environment and was quite happy. and even in chicago, this would be incredibly cold for this time of year, see number 2 above. this is just ridiculous!
so i have been forced to do it. i have been running outside and riding inside. i don't like to run...but i do like being outside and running at lunch is a great break in my day. it is a protective thing i do for my co-workers. riding inside is just mind numbing. chris and i rode while watching a movie the other night and i have gone to spin. spin works better for me, but it is convenient to ride at home.
speaking of spin, i am going to share the tidbits of information that i learn in that class. for example, last year i learned from a spin instructor that it is important to remember to breathe. i had never thought of this, but it really is important to breathe. this week we took our pulse (which I question whether was done correctly) and we added the zero to get it beats per minute. i was then informed that i wanted my heart rate below 160 bpm or i would not be burning fat but muscle and "who wants that?" really? i was burning muscle? interesting... i anticipate there will be more of these in the future.

um...you are not burning muscle. It is a common theory that "long and slow" will burn more fat. It isn't necessarily true though. Short intense rides can burn a lot of fat.

As far as "burning muscle" I think the only time your body does that is when you don't fuel properly, and after burning through your glycogen stores, fat stores and protein stores, you end up cannibalizing your muscle tissue. It is the reason many endurance drinks have protein in them.

It isn't something that is going to happen in a spin class.
